My Journey: Why Bother Making Money Online From Home?

Long time readers of the Art of Selfhood know that I used to earn huge smackeroos on an oil and gas rig. For four great years I earned more cash than I could count and traveled to crazy adventurous locations all over the world, from the jungles of West Papua to the Western oceans of Australia.

It was fun, but it was also dangerous as hell and any day I could have been killed at my place of work. In fact, on the last ever hitch I did a fella was crushed to death, just while he was standing there minding his own damned business because the boat rocked and a loose container slid along the deck and turned him into jam.

It was horrible, and it was enough to confirm for me that the recurring thoughts I’d been having about trying my hand at something else were in fact probably good thoughts to listen to, and so I resigned and started trying to make a little money from home.

With the birth of Junior Freedom I knew I’d made the right decision. There was no way I could leave this little dude behind and go off to the jungle for months at a time. I wanted to spend as much time with him as possible, at least in the early stages, and so I decided to do just that.

My decision was made a lot easier by the fact that the price of oil crashed and burned to decades-long lows and rigs started closing left and right, and I could see the writing on the wall, but I think I would have eventually gone anyway. This economic crash just helped me make the move a little faster.

As I started trying to make money from home as a writer I began to notice that there are layers to this, much like anything else.

At the beginning I was overwhelmed with all there was to learn, couldn’t tell a legit work from home opportunity from a blatant scam, and to be honest, wasn’t all that good a writer as compared to today. As time went on, however, just like in any trade I learned the ropes and began to figure this things out.

I started being able to avoid the scams, found the ways to make maximum profits, and soon was able to take care of my bills. I breathed a huge sigh of relief, realizing that unless I actually choose to do so for my own gain, I will never again have to work a regular job.

Once you figure out how to make extra money from home, even while you’re still working, and once it grows into enough to cover your bills, you experience a wave of freedom you have probably hoped for all of your life. I felt it, and so will you.

It’s one of the greatest experiences in my life to date. It’s early retirement from the 9-5 grind, and it feels awesome.

That’s my story. I now live some of the year on a tropical island in the Philippines and some of the year in my home country of Ireland. I intend to continue down this road and as my online income grows and I find ways to diversify it and create new revenue streams, I can’t see myself returning to regular work anytime soon, unless it’s for a REALLY big payday.

For me, the freedom is just too good to pass up! I think you’ll find the same when you crack this nut and start making money online from home.

Making Money From Home/Online Frequently Asked Questions

Rather than rabbit on about myself without end, I’ll now do my best to answer some of the frequently asked questions I both get and have seen online regarding make money from home jobs and other opportunities like starting online businesses.

I won’t waffle. I won’t lie. I’ll give it to you straight and let you make your own mind up. Making money from home isn’t a cakewalk, and 90% of what you see out there is pure grade BS designed to extract your dollars from your pocket. You’ve got to learn the game, and if you take on board what I’m about to show you, you’ll be one step closer than most.

Q. G, how can I make money from home fast? Honestly, this is the single biggest impediment to making money on the web. This mindset is poisonous and is exactly what scam artists and predators online prey on.

It is possible to start making money from home in a reasonably short space of time, but it isn’t going to be a torrential river of money and anyone who tells you it is has an agenda, and probably a system to sell you.

If you want to make money from home now, as in today, you are going to have to exchange some sort of service for people’s cash. This could be web design, copy writing, coding apps, teaching English or just about any other service you can think of, but if you want to start making money right away, you’re going to have to do it by offering a service.

Making money online from home through things like blogging takes a hell of a long time. I can tell you for a fact that I was writing on the Art of Selfhood for over 2 years before I saw a single penny from it. Most people simply don’t have the patience and determination to make it as a blogger, and so most should avoid it.

You have to be a true long-term thinker and strategist to even stand a chance of making it as a blogger. I recommend at least 5 years of commitment if you want to make money selling e-books and through affiliate sales on your blog or website.

That said, it is possible to make money online fast. To do so, tap into the big freelance sites like People Per Hour and Freelancer. If you’re offering the right service at the right price you could score your first sale or contract by tonight. Don’t expect to make a fortune right away, though. It takes time to build up your reputation, just like in any other thing you do in life.

Q. G, can I make money from home part time? Yes, you absolutely can, and I recommend you do it this way. I seriously don’t recommend following in my ‘all or nothing’ footsteps unless you have a comfortable cash cushion. Even still, why take the risk when you can start making money from the comfort of home at nights or on weekends and test the waters?

I recommend that you continue doing whatever it is you’re doing, and take the logical approach – work online in the evenings and after work, and when you’re making enough money online to start paying your bills, then jack in the job. You could even do this slowly and phase your job out bit by bit, cutting down to part time hours as the online income begins to grow and grow.

Make money from home at night, then become your own boss. That’s my best advice to anybody starting down this road. Depending on your level of understanding of technology and your skills, it could take you more time or less time than me. Test it by trying it part time first. Don’t expect miracles overnight.

Q. Can I make money from home as a teenager? If you are a teenager and are already thinking about going down this road, I envy you! I look back over the last decade of my life at some of the piece of crap jobs I suffered through, some of the horrible people I worked for, and I can’t help but feel a little pissed now that I know how to make money from anywhere using just my laptop.

While I don’t have any regrets as I believe everyone walks the path they do for a reason, I reeeeeaaallllyyyy wish I had of known about these online money making opportunities when I was a teenager.

Back then, the web was just starting to take off and making money online wasn’t really a huge thing. Nowadays, if you’re still a teenager, the world is your oyster. You can literally blaze a trail starting now that will see you live a life of absolute freedom before you even leave college. If you’re really good, maybe you won’t even need to go to college!

As a teenager, I recommend you start a blog or website immediately. Write on something you are passionate about and have held a long term interest in. Become an expert in that field. Write and write and write for years. Learn a little about SEO and the other blogging tricks, but just keep writing. You’ll soon be making connections and before you know it you’ll be an established expert in a few years, or you’ll at least be close to getting there.

This will set you up for a life you can only dream of in your twenties and thirties. If you stick with it you should be making more than everyone else by the time you graduate. Don’t look for an easy way to make money from home or a way to make money from home doing nothing. Dedicate yourself to paying the price for the life you want later. Taking shortcuts will cost you big time in the long run.

As the old saying goes: The experts make the cash, the other people pay them.

DO IT! I need say no more.

Q. G, why do you believe in making money on the web so much? It’s simple – there are about 3.5 billion people online currently, and experts estimate that another 3 billion are going to come online by 2040. I want to be there to service those existing 3.5 billion and incoming 3 billion people.

If you get a foothold now, there are 3 billion people that have no idea about the internet yet and will be coming online looking for everything from clothes to travel deals to entertainment. Since they’ll be new to the web, if they find your site they’ll assume your an expert, which you are compared to them if you know how to put together a blog. They will thus likely buy something from you, or at least a percentage will.

I think this is literally the gold rush of the new millennium, and I think it’s far, far from over. Lot’s of people will try to convince you it’s saturated and everything has been done. That’s just because they want to hold onto their established positions and discourage competition.

You can do this. It’s there for the taking. There’s room for everyone. You’ve got to speculate to accumulate.

If you want to step up and have a go you can click the Bluehost banner on the right hand side on this site (scroll up), which includes an easy 1-click WordPress install and is the best deal on the web. I’ll get a little kickback from them, at no extra cost to you, which I’ll greatly appreciate!

If you do this through my banner and run into any problems, I’m available by email to guide you through it all the way. I doubt you’ll need to though. It’s so easy a child could do it.

Q. G, can you give me an idea to make money from home? Sure. This one is super simple and you can do it as long as you are a native level English speaker and can read, which I know you can since you’re reading this post.

Go on Google, look for sites owned by non-American companies, and start flicking through their pages. I guarantee you there are English language mistakes in them, and that’s an opportunity for you to capitalize.

Contact the webmaster or owner and tell them that you feel they could improve their company image by allowing you to proof read the site. Charge $8 per 1000 words and blitz it. Fix it up and make them look good. Collect the money by PayPal and you’re home in a boat. This is a legit way to make money from home since it provides a useful product or service to others.

Another great way is to take my Keys to Freedom Course and learn how I do it. I’m not going to give you everything for free 😉

You can also think of your own make money from home ideas. Just remember that there’s probably someone else out there doing it, so you’ve either got to do things in a unique and novel way or be the best at it. I prefer the latter!

Q. G, should I start a business? This one gets asked a lot, and my answer is no, not to begin with.

Once you start making serious cash there are lots of tax advantages to starting your own business. You can expense certain items before you pay tax, and you will likely pay reduced rates. The system is designed to put the screws to individuals and reward businesses, so there’s a certain point in time when this is a good thing to do, but you likely won’t need to until you’re making $10,000 or more annually.

Just run things as a self-employed individual to begin with. After you’re starting to get some serious cash, register a business and take full advantage. You really don’t need the hassle to start off with.

Q. G, I have no special skills. How can I make money online? I guarantee there’s a niche for you, but you just haven’t realized it yet. It could be a website telling tourists all about your home city or country, it could be about poker strategy, or it could simply be you writing about your unique perspective on world events, like many do in a news/opinion site.

Try to think of something without any competition and you’ll be well ahead of the pack. Trying to get a foothold in big affiliate niches like the health space is going to require a hell of a lot of work and potentially years of effort before making any money. A website on your home city, however, and a business deal set up with local businesses to adveritse on it could start making money a lot faster.

Also, if you are a human being of average intelligence living in the Western world you DO have a skill set many people would find useful which will allow you to work on the web.

If you can speak English, you can easily learn to teach it. If you can read and edit, you could be of great use to students or businesses run by people who don’t speak English as a first language. If you have a hobby, there’s a good chance other people have the same hobby and will be interested in learning more about it.

Make a list of things you know about and start a blog on one of them. This is the knowledge economy, and people will pay to know what you do.

Q. G, I want to start a money making website. How do I rank on Google? If there’s one thing I can guarantee you it’s this – if there’s a lot of money to be made, there’s a lot of competition. That’s why people will pay fortunes for SEO experts to help them climb to page one of Google, and naturally, those experts keep their secrets on lock down.

There is no room in this article to go in-depth on SEO. I suggest you head over to Quicksprout.com or Backlinko.com for the best advice on the web. Neil Patel and Brian Dean are two of the foremost experts on this subject and will show you the way. Their sites are very ‘newbie friendly’, and you’ll have a much better idea how to rank your site after spending a few evenings browsing through their free material.

Q. G, is it possible to make money buying and selling domain names? Yes, that’s still possible. Lot’s of people do it and while the very best one-word names like Sex.com have already been sold for millions of dollars, there’s still a lot of potential for domain names out there.

SEO experts will pay to have domain names with key words in them. They might not pay a million bucks, but they might pay $5000. If you pick up a domain for $7 a year and hold it for 3, then sell it at that sort of markup, that’s what’s called a very good deal.

To capitalize on this, think of possible future trends and what might be ‘in’ come 5 years from now. I have recently made a number of domain name purchases which I think are going to be worth thousands of times what I paid for them in 5-10 years. I’m willing to wait that long, because the time is going to pass anyway so I might as well be sitting pretty when I get there.

This is another online money making opportunity that requires a lot of patience and long-term thinking. That’s precisely why 99% of people will fail at it, and precisely why the select few of us who have the character to see it, take it and wait for the right moment can make money from it.

It’s also possible to buy domain names, develop and rank websites attached to them, and sell them on sites like Empireflippers.com

Q. How do I spot scams? It’s no secret that the world of making money online and from home is jam packed full of BS artists and scammers. There’s something about the whole thing that’s sickening, since a lot of people who are looking for opportunities are out of work, sick, need money desperately or are vulnerable in some other way.

Yet, scammers aren’t going away anytime soon. They’re here to stay, so you’ve just got to learn how to spot them. Look out for unrealistic offer like ‘Make money from home with direct sales – Earn $1000 per day or more!’ These are almost always scams, and the unrealistic earnings potential is a dead giveaway.

Also, be aware of opportunities that charge you a signup fee to join. I’ve got no problem with people charging for e-books and courses, and in fact I do so myself, but if there’s a requirement to pay a joining fee to get access to a specific opportunity, there’s a good chance you’re headed toward bullshit city. A lot of pyramids run this way, and for me it’s a huge stop sign on any path.

If you want to make money from home honestly, don’t expect that others feel the same way. Always start out with the assumption it’s a scam, and let them convince you otherwise.

If you follow that rule of thumb you should avoid most of the tricksters.

Q. How do I get paid online? There are lots of ways to get paid online. E-Wallets like PayPal and Skrill are hugely popular, and there are e-commerce platforms that will allow you to transfer balances right into your bank account if you’re selling things from a website.

If you want to make money from home making things like furniture or crafts, or if you’re an artist, just stick with the big platforms like Ebay and Amazon to begin. They’ll transfer the money directly from your user account to your bank account and they can 100% be trusted.

Summary

There are make money from home moms out there absolutely destroying you in terms of earnings. How long are you going to sit back and wait while the gold rush of the new millennium is right at your fingertips?

Making money from home isn’t for everyone. Some people prefer the steady pay cheque and that’s fully understandable, but remember there’s nothing to say you can’t have both!

My advice is to give making money online a try. You can do it from home on the sofa, from the beach, or even from the window of a train while the world goes by outside. I’ve done all three, so I know for sure it can be achieved.

I hope this has been a useful guide. If there’s anything I haven’t covered or you have any other questions – just drop me a line.

As always,

Desire. Decide. Persist.
